چکیده

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is considered as one of the developmental difficulties caused by dysfunctions of the brain. There are a variety of symptoms with ASD, but these can be significantly improved by appropriate treatment and education. Thus, it is important to find the patients with ASD while young. Recently, research on the olfactory senses of patients with ASD is being done. It is reported that there are differences of odor detection and identification abilities between people with ASD and controls. Our aim was to develop the screening examination by olfaction, hence we developed an application to assess the odor detection and identification abilities in children by using olfactory display which uses pulse ejection. We also investigated the olfactory abilities of the children with ASD using the application. However, we found some problems with application, and we made improvements. After the improvements, we assess the olfactory abilities of the typically developing children. As a result, we saw similar tendency as in the related works on olfactory abilities in children with ASD by the olfactory display.

Olfactory Measurement Method at Health checkup with Olfactory Display using Pulse Ejection

A decline in olfaction is reported to be an early symptom of diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Thus, from a medical point of view, understanding the condition of the olfactory system is important. However, unlike sight and hearing, olfaction is not examined at a regular health checkup. Because scents linger in the air and measurements require a great deal of care and time. I...

Assessment of olfactory detection thresholds in children with autism spectrum disorders using a pulse ejection system

BACKGROUND Atypical responsiveness to olfactory stimuli has been reported as the strongest predictor of social impairment in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). However, previous laboratory-based sensory psychophysical studies that have aimed to investigate olfactory sensitivity in children with ASD have produced inconsistent results. The methodology of these studies is limited by se...

Comparison of Olfactory Function before and After Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

Introduction: Olfactory loss in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis has been measured by different methods. However, the results have been variable, and it is not clear whether endoscopic sinus surgery significantly improves olfactory function. This study was performed to evaluate the influence of endoscopic sinus surgery on olfactory function in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis.  Material...

There are many different treatment options for polyps most notably the diagnosis and elimination of underlying causes. Some polyps do not respond to medication therapy or they relapse, and therefore requir...

Recent concepts about sense of smell, odorant receptors and physiology of olfaction- an insight

The sense of olfaction reached its zenith in development much earlier than other special senses. Olfaction is much more acute than the other senses, exhibits both high sensitivity for odours and high discrimination between them. This plays a very important role even in the social and behavioral aspects of human beings. Recent studies using molecular genetics, electrophysiology and behavioral an...
